Van de Ven Double Halts Everton's Unbeaten Streak at New Home Ground

The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
