No Fewer Than 98 Palestinians Have Perished in Custody Since October 2023, Israeli Data Shows

According to figures provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while in custody beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has reported that the actual figure is probably substantially higher, as a result of many of missing detainees originating in Gaza.

High-Profile Cases

Several casualties in confinement have been publicly known, such as a middle-aged medical chief who died in prison after a third of a year in detention.

A prisoner incarcerated with the individual testified that he was led to the yard by guards shortly before his passing, clearly wounded and exposed from the hips downward. His corpse has not been returned to Gaza.

Further inmates who died in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and defense forces provided analysts with the total of deaths in custody, and basic further data including the site where they died, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Documentation Problems

In 21 cases, mostly detainees from Gaza, researchers could not to connect the limited information given by authorities to a death documented by rights organisations, via accounts from released detainees or coverage in the media.
