Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
