Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

League Context for Proprietor Penalties

This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases include:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Public Attention

The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones underscores its ongoing effort to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
