An Prediction Market Participant Made $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
